How to Make Troches: A Step-by-Step Guide

Compounded troches are one of the most versatile dosage forms in pharmacy. Whether used for hormone replacement therapy, antifungal treatments, pain management, or veterinary medications, troches offer customizable dosing and excellent patient compliance.

At TICKERWORKS, we've designed innovative troche molds and packaging systems that simplify the compounding process while helping pharmacies achieve consistent results.

What Are Troches?

Troches are medicated lozenges intended to dissolve slowly in the mouth, allowing medication to be absorbed through the oral mucosa. Unlike commercially manufactured products with fixed strengths, compounded troches can be customized to meet each patient's specific needs.

Equipment You Need to Compound Troches

To prepare professional-quality troches, you'll need:

  • Your choice of TICKERWORKS Troche Mold
  • Appropriate troche base
  • Active pharmaceutical ingredient(s)
  • Heat source or hot plate
  • Centrifugal mixer and/or mixing utensils
  • Spatulas
  • Measuring equipment
  • Packaging materials

Step 1:

Calculate the Formula

Determine the desired dosage strength and total number of troches required. Calculate the amount of active ingredient and troche base necessary to fill the selected TICKERWORKS mold.

Because TICKERWORKS molds feature precise cavity volumes, pharmacies can confidently formulate batches with improved dosing consistency.

Step 2:

Prepare the Troche Base

Heat the selected troche base until it reaches a smooth, pourable consistency. Avoid overheating, as excessive temperatures may affect heat-sensitive ingredients.

Step 3:

Incorporate the Medication

Levigate or dissolve the active pharmaceutical ingredient according to the formulation requirements. Thorough mixing is essential to promote uniform distribution throughout the batch.

Step 4:

Fill the TICKERWORKS Troche Mold

Pour the prepared formulation onto the mold surface, then use a spatula to spread the mixture across the cavities. The TICKERWORKS Pour & Dispense™ design allows multiple cavities to be filled simultaneously, helping pharmacies produce uniform troches faster and more efficiently than traditional cavity-by-cavity filling methods.

Step 5:

Allow the Troches to Set

Once filled, allow the mold to cool until the troches have fully solidified.

TICKERWORKS molds are designed for easy release, helping reduce breakage and minimize waste during demolding.

Step 6:

Package for Patient Convenience

After removal from the mold, package the finished troches appropriately.

For maximum convenience and protection, many pharmacies choose Troche Pops® unit-dose packaging systems. Troche Pops® protect each dose individually while helping improve patient adherence. Contact us to learn which molds are compatible with Troche Pops® Unit-Dose Packaging.
