How to Make Rapid Dissolve Tablets (RDTs): A Step-by-Step Guide

Rapid Dissolve Tablets (RDTs), also known as orally disintegrating tablets, have become increasingly popular in compounding pharmacies due to their convenience, ease of administration, and improved patient compliance.

TICKERWORKS RDT molds help pharmacies efficiently prepare customized rapid dissolve tablets while maintaining consistency from dose to dose.

What Are Rapid Dissolve Tablets?

RDTs are solid dosage forms designed to dissolve quickly in the mouth without water. They are particularly beneficial for pediatric, geriatric, and veterinary patients who may have difficulty swallowing traditional tablets or capsules.

Equipment You Need to Compound Rapid Dissolve Tablets

To prepare professional-quality RDTs, you'll need:

  • TICKERWORKS RDT Mold
  • Active pharmaceutical ingredient(s)
  • Excipients and tablet base materials
  • Mixing equipment
  • Measuring tools
  • Forced air convection oven (or equivalent heat source)
  • Packaging materials

How to Make & Package Rapid Dissolve Tablets

with TICKERWORKS RDT Compounding Kit

Step 1:

Calculate the Formula

Determine the desired strength and quantity of tablets to be prepared.

Because TICKERWORKS molds feature consistent cavity volumes, pharmacies can formulate with confidence and improve dose uniformity.

Step 2:

Prepare the Blend

Blend the active ingredients with the selected excipients in accordance with the formulation specifications. Thorough and uniform mixing is critical to ensure consistent distribution of components, maintain the integrity and durability of the rapidly disintegrating tablet (RDT), and support its intended fast disintegration performance.

Step 3:

Fill Your TICKERWORKS RDT Mold

Distribute the prepared blend across the mold surface and use a spatula or similar tool to work the material into each cavity. Apply firm, even strokes to ensure the cavities are completely filled and packed, minimizing air gaps and promoting uniform tablet weight, shape, and mechanical integrity.

TICKERWORKS molds are designed to facilitate efficient cavity filling and excess material removal, helping produce RDTs with consistent dimensions, appearance, and durability.

Step 4:

Form the Rapid Dissolve Tablets

After the cavities have been filled, use the appropriate TICKERWORKS Tamper to compress the formulation within the mold. The tamper is designed to apply uniform compression across all cavities.

Depending on the formulation requirements, the compressed tablets may then be dried, baked, or cured to achieve the desired hardness, structural stability, and rapid disintegration profile.

Step 5:

Remove and Inspect

After the tablets have reached the appropriate consistency, remove them from the mold and inspect for quality and uniformity.

The easy-release characteristics of TICKERWORKS molds help minimize breakage during demolding.

Step 6:

Package for Protection

Protect RDTs from moisture by packaging them appropriately.

For improved handling and patient convenience, the dosage forms may be packaged in Troche Pops® which are designed to securely hold the medicated preparation while providing air-tight sealing, and safety while traveling.
